How an Enphase System Actually Fails
Enphase puts a microinverter on every panel instead of routing the whole array through one central inverter. That changes what a failure looks like. One dead microinverter usually takes down one panel. The rest of the array keeps producing normally. It's not a system failure, it's a module that needs attention.
What usually deserves a closer look is the IQ Gateway (Envoy), the box that collects every microinverter's data and reports it to Enlighten. When the app shows the whole system dark or "not communicating," the panels are often fine. The gateway lost its connection to them, or to the internet.
What We're Usually Looking At
- One or a few panels at zero or low production in Enlighten while everything else looks normal, usually a single microinverter.
- The whole system reporting offline or "not communicating", usually the gateway, not every microinverter failing at once.
- Encharge or Ensemble battery questions: charge behavior that doesn't match expectations, or backup that didn't perform as expected during an outage.
- Firmware or configuration issues showing up as odd production patterns rather than an outright failure.
How We Work an Enphase Call
We read Enlighten, at the individual microinverter level where it's available, before we roll a truck. That's usually enough to tell whether we're chasing one bad module or a gateway/communications problem. From there: microinverter replacement, gateway troubleshooting or replacement, and recommissioning the array afterward so Enlighten reports correctly again, all in the same visit.
Sometimes it's simpler than it looks. One recent call was a single branch circuit gone completely dark. Traced it to a home-run connection where a wire nut had never fully seated in the junction box. Fixed on the spot, branch back online before we left.
What We're Certified On
- IQ8 Installer Certification, January 2023, microinverter-level installation and service
- Solar PV Installation Certification, August 2024, 6.0 NABCEP CEUs
- Ensemble Storage Installation, June 2022, 4.5 NABCEP CEUs, relevant to Encharge battery work
- Storage Design Certification, August 2024, 1.0 NABCEP CEU, also battery-relevant
Existing Systems Welcome
You don't need to have used us for the install. Most of the Enphase systems we work on, we didn't put in.
Original installer gone or no longer answering? We call that an orphaned system, plain language for the situation, not an official Enphase status. See Orphaned System Rescue → for how that works.
Warranty & RMA
If a microinverter or gateway needs replacing under warranty, we can diagnose the failure, document it, and install the replacement once it's approved. Enphase decides what's covered and approves the claim. We do the field work.
